The basics — what an FLHA actually is
An FLHA — Field Level Hazard Assessment — is a short daily safety check that a worker completes before starting any task on a construction site. It's sometimes called a field level risk assessment (FLRA) or a pre-task hazard assessment.
The idea is simple: before you pick up a tool, you stop and think about what could hurt you. You write it down. You sign it. Your supervisor confirms it happened. That signed, timestamped record is your protection — and your company's protection — if something goes wrong.
In Alberta, the OHS Act requires a written hazard assessment before work begins on any regulated construction site. In BC, WorkSafeBC and the BCCSA COR program both require documented daily hazard assessment from every worker. No FLHA = no legal protection.
What goes in an FLHA
A standard FLHA captures seven pieces of information. Every one of them matters in an investigation or audit:
- Worker name and signature — individual, not crew-level. Each person signs their own.
- Date and time — proving the assessment happened before work started, not after.
- Job site location — where on the project the work is being done that day.
- Tasks being performed — what specific work is planned for the shift.
- Hazards identified — specific risks present that day: falls, equipment, weather, chemicals.
- Controls in place — exactly how each hazard is being managed.
- PPE confirmation — personal protective equipment worn that shift.
A digital FLHA like TrueCOR Safety also captures GPS coordinates at the exact moment of submission — proving the worker was physically on site when they completed the form. No paper form can do this.

Common FLHA mistakes to avoid
With TrueCOR Safety, a supervisor at 7am sees exactly who's submitted and who hasn't — sorted by site. The follow-up is specific: "Tyler, I can see you haven't scanned yet — before you touch that." That's different from a general announcement that everyone needs to do their forms.
